The Ultimate Guide to FTTP

In today’s increasingly digital world, a fast and secure internet connection isn’t simply a luxury - it’s a necessity. And that’s where Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) broadband comes in, offering the gold standard in connectivity.

The Ultimate Guide To FTTP

At Quickline we believe that when it comes to broadband, faster is better! In this ultimate guide to FTTP blog, we’ll explore FTTP speeds, connection process and the benefits of using a secure FTTP broadband connection.

What is FTTP?

FTTP means Fibre To The Premises and can be up to 30 times quicker than traditional broadband connections like Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC).

FTTP uses fibre optic cables that are directly plugged into your local internet exchange, giving you pure, high-speed access to the internet.

What speed will I get with FTTP?

One of the main advantages to FTTP broadband is its lightning-fast speeds.

FTTP uses fibre-optic cables that operate at the speed of light. That means in the blink of an eye, you’ll get speeds of up to 1Gbps and beyond.

FTTP doesn’t just make your internet use almost instantaneous, it provides a wide range of benefits including:

  • Working from home: Use multiple devices at one time, download large work files in seconds and take part in video calls without any interruptions or lagging.
  • Gaming: There will be virtually no latency when you’re playing online multiplayer games.
  • Entertainment: An FTTP connection is ideal for streaming content, especially on data-heavy 4K TVs.
  • Future-ready: Secure FTTP broadband future-proofs your internet connection, meaning you’re prepared for the digital landscape of tomorrow.

Is it worth getting FTTP?

The short answer is yes.

FTTP is faster, more reliable and more secure than traditional broadband connections. It delivers ultrafast full-fibre broadband directly to your property, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And thanks to the fibre-optic technology, you can increase your speeds if you need to. Some tests in Japan have delivered speeds of 319 Terabits per second. To put that in context, you could download all of Netflix’s content – and we mean all of it – in much less than a second.

Another huge advantage of FTTP is the security and reliability it brings.

FTTP broadband works using encrypted data transmission, which safeguards your data from possible hacks. The fibre-optic cables also minimise the risk of signal interception, adding another layer of security to your internet usage.

FTTP broadband is currently available to nearly 50% of UK properties, with a target of 85% by the end of 2026. So if FTTP isn’t available in your area at the moment, sit tight as it’s likely to be coming soon.

Alongside the security advantages, having an FTTP connection installed can increase the value of your property. A fast and reliable internet connection is now one of the key things people look for in a property. And thanks to the post-Covid working from home boom, fast and reliable internet speeds have become increasingly crucial.

You can use a broadband postcode checker to see if fibre broadband is live in your area and if so, what packages are available.

How is FTTP connected to your house?

FTTP works by connecting fibre-optic cables directly to your house, meaning you’re plugged straight in with super-fast speeds from the start.

As fibre-optic cables will need to be installed, our technicians survey your property and surrounding area to work out the best route for the cables.

Once that’s established, the installation process happens in two stages. Firstly, we’ll install a Customer Service Point (CSP) box on the exterior of your property. This connects you to the fibre optic network, which is either installed underground or on a nearby telegraph pole.

We’ll then install an Optical Network Termination (ONT) modem in your property. This acts as your router or hub, connecting you to the FTTP network.

Our technicians will then connect and test your FTTP connection to ensure you’re getting the highest quality speeds.

Investing in the future

FTTP broadband is the future of internet connectivity. It not only provides lightning-fast speeds, it gives users reliability and security. The incredible FTTP speeds have the power to transform your working from home environment, turbo-charge your entertainment and gaming systems and increase your property value. And with 85% of the UK expected to receive FTTP coverage in the next three years, there’s never been a better time to invest in the future and join the FTTP revolution.
