The Year 10 Engineering students from Baysgarth School in Barton-upon-Humber visited Quickline’s training facility in Hull to explore how full fibre broadband networks are built and maintained, gaining telecoms experience while taking part in practical activities and meeting teams working across the business.
During the visit, students experienced elements of real-world engineering, including safe working-at-height demonstrations, learning about fibre infrastructure and discovering the technology helping connect rural communities across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
What telecoms experience means for students
Ben Wilson, Head of Design and Technology at Baysgarth School, said the experience brought classroom learning to life for students.
“Throughout the visit, students saw Baysgarth’s core values in action. Resilience was demonstrated through the demanding work involved in maintaining fibre optic networks outdoors in all weather conditions. Responsibility was highlighted during pole climbing and safe working-at-height activities, where students learned the importance of leaving every environment as it was found, or better. Respect was reflected in Quickline’s pride in delivering high-quality work and professional service to communities across the region and beyond.
“The visit also helped students develop awareness of the employability skills valued within industry, including teamwork, communication, problem solving and professionalism, while broadening their understanding of the wide range of careers available within engineering and telecommunications”.
The visit forms part of Quickline’s wider social value programme, which aims to inspire young people across the region to consider careers in STEM, engineering and digital infrastructure.

Rachel Bowerman, Social Value Manager at Quickline, said: “Providing opportunities like this is incredibly important because it gives students a genuine insight into the exciting and varied careers available within telecommunications.
“There’s a huge difference between learning about technology in the classroom and seeing it in action for yourself. As we continue expanding our full fibre network across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, we’re proud to help young people understand the role connectivity plays in communities and the opportunities the sector can offer in the future.”

Quickline supports communities across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire; recently bringing ‘Cones and Rural Broadband’ book reading to school students in York and inspiring the next generation with STEM workshops in East Yorkshire.
