Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) broadband is available in most parts of the UK, but there are some areas which are yet to receive the service. In fact, according to recent data from independent research carried out by ThinkBroadband at this point 98% of the UK is able to receive ‘Superfast’ (aka 30Mbps and faster) broadband. Comparatively only 69% of the UK is able to access Full Fibre to the premises (FTTP) services with improved speeds.

What is the difference between superfast, ultrafast and gigabit broadband?
When shopping online for broadband providers and deals you’ll see many buzzwords flying around related to different broadband speeds. This terminology may see confusing at first but is actually fairly simple. What’s the difference between superfast, ultrafast and gigabit broadband – we can explain:
- Superfast Broadband – Generally defined as speeds above 30Mbps. Widely available throughout the UK.
- Ultrafast Broadband – This is referring to broadband speeds above 300Mbps and beyond. That’s 10x faster than Superfast Broadband.
- Gigabit Broadband – This is referring to broadband speeds above 1000Mbps, also commonly known as 1Gbps. Some of the highest speeds available. This generally requires FTTP to achieve these speeds.
Do I need a special Wi-Fi router to get fibre broadband?
If your Wi-Fi router has a WAN port it should be capable of working with a fibre broadband connection. As over 98% of the UK is capable of receiving Superfast Broadband to the property, these days most modern routers will have a WAN port and will be fully compatible with fibre broadband connections.
Quickline includes a FREE fibre compatible router as part of any new fibre broadband package you take out.
Am I guaranteed fast upload speeds with fibre broadband?
For most fibre broadband providers – no. Upload and download speeds are generally separate, when it comes to broadband package offerings. For the vast majority of users the download speed is much more important to their day-to-day use than the upload speed of the package. However, if upload speeds are something important to you, Quickline’s residential full fibre packages offer symmetrical speeds, so the download and upload are the same, offering customers faster downloads as well as faster uploads.
