No longer left behind: Life online gets ultrafast at last for Larry

Tucked away in the peaceful countryside of Clayton West, just south of Huddersfield, Larry Beard knows all about the challenges of rural living.

Life online gets ultrafast with full fibre broadband

With no main sewage system or gas supply, no streetlights, and just eight homes on his postcode, connectivity hasn’t always come easy but now, life online gets ultrafast as Quickline broadbands lights up the street for Larry in Clayton West.

That all changed when Larry became a Quickline customer. He was connected as part of our network rollout for Project Gigabit, the UK Government funded programme enabling hard-to-reach communities access fast, reliable, gigabit-capable broadband, reaching parts of the UK that might otherwise miss out on upgrades to next-generation speeds.

For Larry, it’s been a life-changing upgrade.

“We’re right out in the countryside. We have no main sewage, we don’t have the main gas supply, we have no lampposts and there’s only eight houses on the postcode. So, we are a rural location, life’s good and it’s a nice place to live but the internet was what I call a horror story.

“We struggled with stability. So, you’ll watch a movie, and you’ll watch it three times because the internet would go off. You couldn’t watch Netflix or Prime. And I was getting concerned that you’ll get bypassed as far as life because everything is online these days. And of course, there’s no commitment from the historic providers, it’s not going to be commercially viable for them to come up the hill and to install the fibre and they would never commit one way or the other.

“So, I learnt about Quickline. There was a van down the road, and I could see they were trying to push some fibre through. I didn’t know Quickline at the time, so I said, ‘You’re installing it?’ and he said ‘Yeah’

“I was amazed how easy it was to deal with Quickline and the communication of the installers. And now we’re on a 500Mbps package and it’s stable, solid, brilliant.

“Last night I downloaded a movie from Netflix. Before it would take forever, but it was one minute and five seconds for an hour and 45 minute movie, which I thought was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. It’s knowing, and having the confidence, everything’s now just second nature. We’re not having to think, is the internet going be on? Is it going to stay on? More importantly, the biggest thing was the stability. And now it’s so solid, so stable. It’s just straightforward because Quickline have delivered on their promise. It just makes it so easy to recommend them.”
