Quickline’s partnership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is beginning to take shape, with Quickline engineers and FIRST LEGO League step up to play an active role in bringing STEM learning to life in schools across West Yorkshire.

Through our sponsorship of the national robotics competition, FIRST LEGO League, we’re enabling schools in the region to take part in the programme – and our engineers are preparing to volunteer their time and expertise to support the pupils involved.

Last week, Senior Programme Manager Fran Ward from the IET joined an engineering team meeting to introduce the opportunities available and give colleagues a taste of what’s to come. The session was hands-on, lively and fun, as our engineers put their own problem-solving skills to the test using LEGO kits, mirroring the same experience that students will soon have in schools.

The team explored how the competition works, how workshops are structured, and how they, as volunteers, can help deliver activities that encourage teamwork, creativity and innovative thinking. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to see first-hand how their own skills and experience as engineers can inspire and engage young minds.

Quickline’s engineers will now have the chance to visit classrooms, run workshops, and support students as they build and programme their own LEGO models. By volunteering their time, our colleagues will be helping to spark curiosity, boost confidence and encourage pupils to think about future careers in engineering and technology.

Finn Richardson, one of the engineers who took part in the session said: “It was great to get hands-on with the LEGO kits and see how much fun the pupils will have while also learning about problem-solving and teamwork. I’m looking forward to going into schools and working with young people to help them see how diverse a career in engineering can be.”

Rachel Bowerman, Social Value Team Leader at Quickline, said: “This initiative is part of our wider commitment in the delivery of our project Gigabit contracts to supporting the communities we serve and making a positive impact beyond broadband. We know the next generation of innovators is already bursting with potential in schools across Yorkshire, and we’re proud to play our part in helping that talent shine.”

With the support of the IET and the enthusiasm of our engineers, we’re excited to see the FIRST LEGO League experience come to life in schools very soon.
