Quickline Donates Tablets to Bedale Community Library to Boost Digital Skills

Bedale Community Library in North Yorkshire is seeing first-hand how improved digital access can support residents, as Quickline donates tablets.

Quickline donates tablets as part of its ongoing donation programme, with the tablet donation forming part of the company’s commitment to Project Gigabit, the UK government’s programme enabling hard-to-reach communities to access fast, reliable gigabit-capable broadband. The devices are already being used during the library’s weekly IT support sessions.

Held every Wednesday afternoon, the sessions are led by trained volunteers who help residents with a wide range of online tasks.

During a recent session, volunteer Marion supported one visitor with an online bus pass application, before helping another to write a CV for a Universal Credit application.

The free sessions offer practical, one-to-one support for people who may lack confidence using digital technology.

The library is supported by 22 volunteers, all of whom have received basic training on the tablets. Staff hope the devices will become the first point of support for visitors needing quick digital help, particularly as the number of desktop computers on site is gradually reduced.

Jenny Barrie from Bedale Community Library said: “We’re extremely grateful to Quickline for their very generous donation to help the library not only with the IT support offered to customers who come to our IT help sessions, but also with our thirty-five volunteers.

“We have used them for refresher training sessions, and it’s been really helpful for volunteers to be able to spend time finding their way round a different device to the ones they use at home, in order to help customers a little bit more easily.”

Amelia Williamson, Social Values Executive at Quickline added: “This is a great example of how our Project Gigabit commitments are helping to enhance connectivity for the communities we live and work in.

“By increasing access to devices, more people can access essential online services, supported by dedicated volunteers who foster special community relationships.

“At Quickline, we know connecting communities goes beyond installing broadband – it’s about making sure people have the confidence and the tools to get online and get the most out of it – whether that’s applying for a bus pass, updating a CV, or simply staying in touch with loved ones.”
