To celebrate Get Online Week (Monday 14th to Sunday 20th October), we spent time with residents in the North Yorkshire village, just south of the resort of Filey.
As well as hosting a drop-in digital clinic alongside the weekly village coffee morning, our team provided insightful and useful information about an array of topics such as how to spot scam emails, password protection and shopping safely online.
The two-day event was held at the Community Centre which is benefiting from full fibre broadband connection, provided free of charge by Quickline for use by all the community.
And residents were also able to practice their digital skills using the six chrome books donated to the community centre by Quickline.
Open to everyone and served up alongside a cup of tea and a piece of cake, those who attended were equipped with a wealth of useful information designed to improve their digital skillset.
Connor Moore, social value executive at Quickline and one of the team responsible for delivering the event said: “We’re very aware that people living in rural communities like Hunmanby need to get online for lots of everyday activities such as shopping or to book hospital appointments.
“Often the facilities in villages are poor and so the online needs of people are greater than for those living in more urban areas. But what is seen as a simple task for some is less so for others and we wanted to offer support by teaching some of the basics ensuring people can get online, connect to Wi-Fi and access the services they need.
“It was great to speak to such a good cross section of the community and even better that we were able to share some tips that people found useful.”
Annette Ness, village co-ordinator at Hunmanby said: “‘What a great two days with Connor and his team from Quickline, helping with Get online week. We helped residents with digital queries, from tablets to phones and other general IT issues.
“All of the residents were very impressed with the knowledge and help received and a lot are keen to do more digital workshops in the new year. Thank you!”
