Celebrating Get Online Week with digital Skills workshops across Yorkshire

We understand that getting online isn't just helpful, it's essential. However, many people and organisations face barriers, so we are on a mission to help overcome them.

Celebrating Get Online Week with digital Skills workshops across Yorkshire

We’ve been marking Get Online Week all week with a string of events aimed at empowering individuals and communities with the digital skills they need to thrive.

We’re proud to support countless initiatives that break down these barriers, working with charities and educational establishments to improve digital skills of those within the communities we serve.

From concerns about online safety and personal information to navigating unfamiliar websites and apps, helping remove confidence issues with job applications and managing tasks to basic skills like sending emails or filling in forms – we are working to address all these issues that affect the ability to utilise computers and the internet.

St Augustine’s Centre in Calderdale

In support of Get Online Week, we delivered a digital skills workshop at St Augustine’s Centre in Calderdale, one of the charities benefiting from our partnership with the Community Foundation For Calderdale. St Augustine’s works with refugees and people seeking asylum, providing a vibrant hub for activities, support and advice.

The workshop was delivered to 10 adults, all who participated actively, asking questions and showing an eagerness to build their digital confidence.

The session covered three modules; keeping safe online, cybersecurity essentials, and how to spot fake news. All useful skills that open doors to employment, independence and connection.

Connor Moore, Social Values Executive at Quickline, delivered the workshop. He said: “It is always amazing to see the difference our digital skills workshops make to people’s confidence online.

“From helping them with job applications to speaking to family and friends who live in different parts of the world, we are always proud to make getting online as easy as possible for the individuals.”

The Bangladeshi Youth Organisation (BYO) in Bradford has also been involved in Get Online Week

BYO supports people from Bangladesh and Pakistan living in Bradford. They run activities to tackle educational underachievement, health inequalities, training and unemployment, community cohesion, and isolation, addressing the real challenges facing their community.

Through funding from Leeds Community Foundation, via their partnership with Quickline, digital skills training is reaching even more service users and has allowed them to purchase new tablets to carry out the sessions.

Mohammed Joynal, Projects Manager at BYO, said: “We are proud to be working with Leeds Community Foundation, Give Bradford and Quickline on delivering the Digital Inclusion Cafe here at BYO.

“With over 26 ladies benefiting from digital upskilling, equipping them with essential skills to navigate online safely for everyday needs, such as shopping, making appointments and keeping track of their children’s school progress. The sessions are fun and engaging, with everyone giving positive feedback.”

Sarah Lilleyman-Hall, Social Values Manager at Quickline, added: “We know that reliable connectivity is just the first step. True digital inclusion means ensuring people have the skills and confidence to make the most of being online.

“As we mark Get Online Week, we’re reminded that our work goes beyond broadband. It’s about ensuring everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, can thrive in our increasingly connected world.”
