South Yorkshire pupils were given a unique opportunity to explore the world of work through a raft of hands-on and engaging activities for a career in broadband held at Barnsley’s Ward Green Primary School.

Elisabeth Kamaris, our social values lead for South Yorkshire, was joined by fibre engineer Chris Clay to deliver an exciting, interactive session for a career in broadband.

Elisabeth said: “As part of our Project Gigabit contract for the South Yorkshire region we have a made a commitment to deliver a wide range of social value activity with education and employability being a key focus.

“The aim of the event was to help children understand the wide range of careers that exist within different sectors. By exploring the interests of the pupils and linking them to exciting careers, the day allowed them to see how their passions could lead to meaningful and fulfilling career in broadband.”

With 60 Year Six students split into three rotating groups of 20, the morning was carefully structured into three 45-minute sessions. Each group engaged with representatives from three different organisations, representing sports, construction and telecommunications.

With the help of visual displays and real-life examples from their day-to-day roles, the professionals showed how a passion for technology, gaming, or digital content could evolve into a future career. Hands-on activities helped bring the subject to life, giving pupils a chance to ask questions and explore what different roles really entail.

Chris Clay said: “The morning was fantastic! The children were really engaged in learning about what we do at Quickline, what makes us different to others and what range of different roles we have. We got asked lots of great questions about what we do, and it was great to hear some of them are now considering a career in broadband when the time comes.”

Elisabeth added: “A huge thank you to all the organisers, participating companies, and of course, the young people, for making the day such a success. Quickline is proud to play a role in shaping the workforce of the future and we can’t wait to see what these bright young minds achieve.”
