# What are megabits?

Internet speed shows how quickly data moves between your device and the internet. It’s measured in **megabits per second (Mbps)**.

### What’s a Megabit?

A **megabit** is a small chunk of data. Imagine it like pouring water into a glass: the faster the flow (measured in Mbps), the quicker the glass fills. If your internet speed is 100 Mbps, your connection can handle 100 “chunks” of data every second.

### Why Does Speed Matter?

- Faster speeds let you load websites, download files, or stream shows more quickly.
- Slower speeds may cause buffering or delays, especially if many people are online at once.

### How Much Speed (megabits) Do You Need?

- **100–200 Mbps**: Great for general use like browsing, emails, and streaming on a few devices.
- **500 Mbps**: Ideal for families or homes with multiple users streaming, gaming, or working online.
- **1000 Mbps (1 Gbps)**: The ultimate speed for tech-savvy families and heavy internet users with lots of devices.
