# Broadband speeds explained

When picking a broadband package, it’s important to think about the speeds you’ll need for your online activities.

### What Is Broadband Speed?

Broadband speed is measured in **megabits per second (Mbps)**. This tells you how many megabits of data your connection can transfer every second. A higher Mbps number means faster speeds and smoother performance. Want to know more about megabits? [[Click Here](https://quickline.co.uk/knowledge/what-are-megabits/)]

### What Activities Need Faster Speeds?

Some activities don’t require much speed. For instance:

- **Browsing websites, checking email, or shopping online** only use small amounts of data.

Other activities rely on faster speeds to avoid interruptions:

- **Streaming TV shows or movies**
- **Online gaming**
- **Video calls**
- **Working from home** (e.g., accessing servers or cloud-based systems)

### How Many Devices Will Be Connected?

The number of devices online at the same time also affects your experience. With everyone spending more time online, a faster speed ensures smooth connections for all users in your household. Knowing this can help you choose the broadband speed that is right for you.

### Download vs Upload Speeds

Most broadband packages focus on download speeds—the speed at which data comes to your device. But don’t forget about **upload speeds**, which matter for:

- **Gaming and video calls**
- **Sending large files** (important for remote work)

By understanding your household’s needs, you can pick a broadband package that keeps everyone connected and happy.
